Initially planned on 5th June 1944, the allied landing in Normandy had been postponed and finally occurred on June 6th in 1944 because of a storm in the English Channel. General Eisenhower gave the start to this big-scale operation which code name is “Operation Overlord”. About 160 000 soldiers crossed the sea for this operation. The German officers didn’t expect a landing in Normandy. On the contrary, they were convinced that the Allies will land in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Many conditions had to be joined to permit the success of the landing: full-moon for the crossing, darkness during the approach phase and sunrise for the attack. In the Bay of Seine, only 3 days a month guarantee these conditions.
The Landing of the 6th June 1944 remains a historic day thanks to the success of the combination of air operations and maritime operations.

C’est le général Eisenhower qui donne le départ de cette opération de grande ampleur dont le nom de code est : «opération Overlord ». Près de 160 000 soldats ont traversé la Manche dans le cadre de cette opération.
De nombreuses conditions doivent être réunies pour que le Débarquement soit un succès : la pleine lune durant la traversée, la pénombre durant la phase d’approche et le petit jour/ lever du soleil pour l’attaque. Seul 3 jours par mois permettent de réunir ces conditions en Baie de Seine.
Le Débarquement du 6 juin 1944 restera un jour historique notamment grâce au succès de la combinaison des opérations aériennes et des opérations maritimes.
